Crawley LGBTQ+ was formed in 2018 by volunteers to organise a Pride celebration for the first time in Crawley, West Sussex,’ says Vincent (main picture). ‘It also quickly became apparent that our town needed other LGBTQ+ services, such as education, advice and care support.
‘When the pandemic happened, we postponed our event to 2021 and focused on delivering a signposting service for outreach support, including counselling, sexual health support, awareness training and family guidance. ‘Our aims are to raise awareness of the issues facing people in the LGBTQ+ community, promote Crawley as a safe place for them and create a sense of belonging.
‘We run weekly online social events, a choir, podcast, radio station and LGBTQ+ helpline. We’re extremely proud to have been chosen as one of Co-op’s local causes*. The support we’ve received from Co-op Members through the Local Community Fund means we’ll be able to extend our outreach services further.
‘We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who’s chosen our cause. Your support will go a long way within the LGBTQ+ community!’
The support we’ve received through the Local Community Fund means we’ll be able to help even more people locally
Recognising the impact on gay rights of New York’s Stonewall Riots in June 1969, Pride Month takes place every year in June. It’s an opportunity for the global LGBTQ+ community to celebrate LGBTQ+ rights and equality — and to highlight how much work is still to be done. With colourful events and parades, it encourages pride in who you are and who you love, while teaching acceptance.
